Help! How Do I Create a Social Media Strategy?

As a business professional, we both know you need to market your product or service. For years businesses used traditional marketing techniques like print media, billboards, knocking on front doors and cold calling to do that. But, the whole world has now evolved and turned digital.

This means those old-school, abrasive marketing techniques aren’t working anymore. As the world has switched to social media, your marketing plan needs to too. I mean, when was the last time you even picked up a newspaper? I can’t remember either!

There are 2.8 billion global social media users with another 1 million new active mobile social users added every single day. With these numbers, is there any wonder why businesses are going social to grow their client base?

What is Social Media Marketing?

Social media is more of an informal way of marketing that revolves around the key values of fostering, growing and connecting a community with a product or service. A social media marketing plan determines what platforms your ideal customers are on and uses those platforms to bring qualified leads into your sales funnel.

Where Do You Start?

Now that you know what a social media marketing strategy is, you’re probably wondering where to begin.

Like any normal race, you begin at the start line. You have to choose what social media platforms are the best for your company.

You don’t have to be on all of them, you just have to be on the right ones that matter to your ideal customers.

Consider these things:

  • Audience – Who is your ideal customer? Where do they hang out online? Which social media network has the right demographic for what your company offers?

  • Reach – If you already have social media platforms, consider which one is getting the most engagement from prospects. Focus some time there.

  • Time – Think about the time that you can devote to a social network. If you can’t commit yourself, contact BNL Media Consulting. We’re social media marketing consultants in Kelowna who are interested in helping you grow your business properly.

Develop a Solid Social Media Marketing Strategy

When you begin to develop a killer social media marketing plan, you’re putting all of your marketing hopes and dreams into one place. These hopes and dreams are then made a reality with some hard work and dedication. There are four main steps in creating an outstanding social media marketing plan. I’m going to share them with you now.

Step 1 – Plan your Goals

What are those hopes and dreams we mentioned above? Like any good marketing strategy, you need to begin with knowing exactly WHY you’re making this strategy and what you want the outcome to be. Your goals should solve your biggest challenges and should be attainable.

Asking for 1 million followers on Instagram in one year isn’t exactly realistic (it would be nice though #InstagramGoals!). But, asking to boost engagement from new followers by 10% in the first quarter of 2019 is very attainable. (#InstagramGoalsX2)

Other goals to consider in 2019:

  • Brand Awareness – As a company, you want to create an authentic and lasting brand awareness online. Focus on meaningful content that showcases your company’s personality. Think about the brands you follow! Isn’t it refreshing when they’re authentic and real online?!

  • Create a fan-base – As social-media continues to grow, so do followings. Does your brand promote user-generated content? Involving your customers and followers in your social media marketing strategy is a great way to boost engagement. I know when one of my favourite brands liked my Instagram post, I was VERY excited. You could do that for your customers/fans too.

  • Better quality leads – Before a sale happens, you have to focus on high-quality leads. Invest time into monitoring specific keywords, phrases, and hashtags. With the help of more efficient social media marketing tactics, higher quality leads will begin to show themselves.

Step 3 – Create Meaningful Content

I know you’re itching to create. That time is finally here!

Social media content is an extremely important part of your marketing strategy. While you may want to skip the previous two steps, we highly recommend following the previous steps before clicking your camera and posting to Instagram.

Create content that fits your brand’s identity.

Take crisp, clear images and create personalized captions for separate social media platforms. We can’t stress enough how each platform needs different things including captions!

Once you start creating content, you need to engage with your audience. If they ask a question in the comments, take a few minutes to reply to them. Replying to comments is a form of “digital networking” and we all know how important networking is as a professional. And don’t forget to like, follow and subscribe too.

Step 4 – Track & Improve

One of the biggest benefits of social media marketing is that nearly everything can be tracked. Without tracking your efforts, you would never know if your social media marketing strategy was successful.

Don’t worry if you’re not a numbers person. At BNL Media, that’s on our plate and we love crunching numbers. We’ll track and show you what’s working and change what’s not.
